For the second fall in a row, smoke from fires in California is playing havoc with the schedule for high school sports in Nevada.
Lowry High School had a number of events canceled last week as smoke from the King Fire near Sacramento, Calif., blew dense smoke into northern Nevada.
The Lady Buckaroo girls golf team had a match scheduled for last Thursday at Wildcreek Golf Course in Sparks, but it was called off due to the smoke. Lowry had reached Fernley before getting the news and Elko spent the night before in Reno. No makeup date has been set.
The Lowry soccer teams were set to play Sparks last Thursday, but those matches were called off. The boys were set to travel to Sparks and the girls were to make their home debut. Those matches will be made up at a later date.
The Lowry freshmen football team was scheduled to travel to Wooster last Thursday, but that games was called of as well. Wooster was set to host junior varsity and varsity games last Friday, but the varsity game was moved to Winnemucca, where the Buckaroos won 44-21. There were attempts to play the freshmen and JV games earlier in the day in Winnemucca, but Washoe County could not provide transportation to Winnemucca on such short notice.
The freshmen and JV games with Wooster will not be made up.
Unlike last year no football games were moved to Winnemucca. The other change that occurred was Spring Creek and Sparks playing in Lovelock.
Indoor events were affected as well, as the Lowry volleyball team did not make the trip to Truckee on Saturday, in what was going to be an early Division I-A North test for the Lady Bucks. That match will be rescheduled at a later date.
The Lowry girls soccer team was also set to travel to Truckee on Saturday to play the Wolverines, but was canceled. That match will be made up as well in the future. The Lowry boys were able to host Truckee on Saturday as the smoke cleared in Winnemucca. The Wolverines won 8-1.[[In-content Ad]]
