'Skimmer device' found on gas pump

WINNEMUCCA - The Winnemucca Police Department was notified that a "skimmer device" was recovered on Monday from one of the fuel pumps at the Flying J Truck Stop in Winnemucca.

The type of skimmer device used at the fuel pumps was completely hidden, according to a news release from WPD. There were no signs or indicators that could be seen without opening the machine. There was a problem reported with the pump's function. A service technician discovered the skimmer and notified police, WPD said.

According to information provided by WPD, a skimmer is an electronic device designed to be attached to ATMs, gas pumps or any other machine that is activated by a debit card, credit card or ATM card. The skimmer is used to illegally read a card's information when it's used for a purchase. The unaware customer does not realize there is a problem until unauthorized purchases and potential cash withdrawals appear on their statement.

Winnemucca police advise anyone who has frequented the business or others to regularly check bank statements for discrepancies.

Winnemucca police alerted other businesses around town about discovered device. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about fraudulent acts can contact the Winnemucca Police Department at (775) 623-6396 or after hours at (775) 623-6429.
