Six vie to be Silver State International Rodeo queen

WINNEMUCCA - The Silver State International Rodeo began its week with the queen contest horsemanship on Monday in the large arena at the Winnemucca Events Complex.



Six girls will vie for the esteemed title of Miss Silver State International Rodeo Queen 2012, to be announced on Friday evening. These girls will continue with the test and interview portion of the contest today and then the speech and modeling on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the West Hall of the Convention Center.

The public is invited to attend free of charge all of these events, with the exception of the test and interviews that takes place today. The queen will be crowned on Friday in the small arena at the Winnemucca Events Complex at 5:30 p.m. A panel of six judges from Oregon, Utah, Idaho and Nevada will have the distinguished job of choosing the best girl to represent SSIR. All of the contestants in the SSIR are wished the best of luck.

Miss Silver State International Rodeo Queen 2011

Shianne Lowe

Shianne Lowe is the 2011 Silver State International Rodeo Queen. She is the 18-year-old daughter of Davey and Lyndi Lowe of West Haven, Utah. Lowe is a 2012 graduate of Fremont High School where she maintained a GPA of 3.9 and was a four-year academic letter recipient. She was awarded the Sterling Scholar award for photography and she also received the UHSRA all-star academic team award and a scholarship to the college of her choice. She is currently enrolled at the OWATC, pursing a degree in Cosmetology and Esthetics.

Lowe is a member of the Spikers High School Rodeo Team where she competes in breakaway roping, cow cutting, barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying and rifle and trap shooting. Her other hobbies include FFA, 4-H livestock, NBHA, photography, snow and water skiing and communicating with sign language. She has been competing in rodeo queening ever since she was five years old and has held numerous titles. The love of queening presented her with a new adventure, and in 2011 it brought her to the great state of Nevada with the opportunity to compete for and win the SSIR title.

Holding this title has taken her to numerous events and rodeos. Some of those include the World Archery Cup competition held in Ogden, Utah, the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gillette, Wyo., the Utah High School State Rodeo Finals, PRCA Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo, the Miss Rodeo Utah competition and several special needs rodeos associated with the Freedom Riders.

These opportunities have taught her how to symbolize the heart of rodeo, hard work, good will, high personal standards and dedication. Lowe also competes in reining shows with her horse Devils or Diamonds, aka "Ruben." She is currently the WCF open reining class champion. She would like to personally thank the many people who have helped her in her success to achieve one of her goals. Miss Utah High School Rodeo

Cassidy Black

Cassidy Black is a 17-year-old 11th grader from North Summit High School. She is the daughter of Glen and Gena Black from Coalville, Utah. Black participates in barrel racing, breakaway roping, pole bending and the queen contest.

She has been active in high school rodeo for three years. Her speech title is "What's in a Rodeo Smile?" Black is a student body officer, a member of the honor roll, a member of National Honor Society and a member of the Utah FFA State Champion Horse judging team. She participates in volleyball, choir, FFA and rodeo. Black was selected as "Best Actress in a Dramatic Role" in the high school musical "Music Man." She enjoys being an Ogden Pioneer Days Whoopie girl and volunteering for the special kid's rodeo. If she had one wish come true it would be that one day a cure for pancreatic cancer would be found so that families would have more time together with loved ones.

Black plans to attend Utah State University majoring in Musical Therapy and Communications. She loves sharing time with her family, dancing the "Hoedown Throwdown," singing and laughing. Her life motto is, "In a world where you can be anything, be yourself."

Miss Alberta High School Rodeo

Shelby True Stewart

Shelby Stewart is a 15-year-old 10th grader attending Highwood High School. She is the daughter of Keith and Denice Stewart from High River, Alberta, Canada. Stewart competes in the events of barrel racing, girls cutting, pole bending and the queen contest. Stewart has been involved in high school rodeo for two years. Her speech title is "Field Guide to Finding-the One."

She participates as a student director in her local DARE Program. As the youth coordinator, she delivers the Peer Pressure Module to grade school students. If she had one wish come true it would be that young adults learn to make safer decisions with drugs and alcohol. Stewart plans to earn a business and psychology degree to work with self- esteem issues concerning youth. She says, "high school rodeo is the most fun I have ever had."



Miss Montana High School Rodeo

Kieran Patten

Kieran Patten is a 15-year-old ninth grader attending Bozeman High School. She is the daughter of Sean and Glenna Patten of Bozeman, Mont.

Patten competes in the events of breakaway roping, goat tying and the queen contest. She has been active in high school rodeo for one year. The title of her speech is "The Great American West." She is an honor roll student with a 3.5 GPA and participates in varsity hockey, softball, student council and plays the violin in the concert orchestra.

Patten is also active in her church youth group and enjoys playing the piano. If Patten had one wish to come true it would be a cure for diabetes. She has two sisters with diabetes and knows the hardships of this disease. She plans to continue rodeo and play hockey in college while she earns a degree in forensic accounting. She wants to "bust" the bad guys. Patten enjoys spending time with her family, riding her horses and making jewelry. Her jewelry was showcased in a high school show this year.

Miss California High School Rodeo

Meg McNamara

Meg McNamara is a 17-year-old 11th grader attending Hart High School. She is the daughter of Myles and Jane McNamara from Valencia, Calif. McNamara competes in the events of barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping and the queen contest. She has been involved in high school rodeo for one year. The title of her speech is "California: Rodeo Style."

McNamara is an officer of National Honor Society with a GPA of 4.4. She had straight A's through junior high. She was nominated for Girl's State Conference, and a Junior Honor Scholar. McNamara participates as a volunteer team member at Real Life Church Children Ministry. She enjoys recreational riding with friends on the ranch and calf sorting. If she had one wish come true it would be to find a cure for Alzheimer's. While volunteering at nursing homes, she saw many elderly people struggle with this disease.

McNamara plans to attend a four-year university and participate on the rodeo team while she earns a degree in Animal Science and eventually attend a veterinary school in hope of becoming an equine surgeon. McNamara says, "High school and the sport of rodeo are two things in my life that I enjoy the most, and being able to combine my love for horses and my love for a social, school-type environment truly allows me to have the best of both worlds."



Miss Idaho High School Rodeo

Isabella Marie Stoakes

Isabella Stoakes is a 16-year-old 10th grader attending Pocatello High School. She is the daughter of Shayne and Cindi Stoakes of Pocatello, Idaho. Stoakes competes in the events of team roping, barrel racing, pole bending and the queen contest.

She has been active in high school rodeo for two years. Her speech title is "The Gem of the Mountains." Isabella holds a 4.0 GPA in advanced placement classes and is a member of the National Honor Society. She also is active in the Civil Air Patrol, and a teen leader in 4-H club.

Stoakes loves to ski, camp, fish and play football with her brother and dad. If she could have one wish come true it would be for everyone to have at least one chance to make their dreams come true. Stoakes plans to receive an appointment to the Air Force Academy and pursue a degree in American History. She wants to fly fighter jets for the US Air Force.

Stoakes says, "It is such an honor to represent my state of Idaho. I want to wish all the contestants good luck."

Miss British Columbia High School Rodeo

Mercedes Little

Mercedes Little is a 15-year-old ninth grader attending South Peace Campus High School. She is the daughter of Kelly Little from Groundbirch, British Columbia, Canada. Little competes in the events of barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping and the queen contest.

She has been active in high school rodeo for one year. Her speech title is "Rodeo Leaves a Hoof Print." Little is active on the senior girls basketball team, and in her free time likes to snowboard and bike ride. If Little had one wish come true it would be that everyone would have the chance to high school rodeo and enjoy the experience as she has.

She plans to attend the University of British Columbia and earn a degree in Teaching. Mercedes says, "I am a quick learner and willing to grab any opportunity. I will always try my hardest and High School Rodeo means everything to me because it has helped me become who I am today."
