Sheriff's deputy sentenced for firing gun in his home

HCSO administrative action is pending

David Lee Karrer, a Humboldt County Sheriff's deputy, was sentenced Monday in Sixth Judicial District Court to up to two years probation - as part of a diversion program that involves counseling for alcohol abuse - for firing a gun into a television in his home last summer.

As part of Karrer's sentence, he is not allowed to carry a firearm for the first year of probation. Sheriff Ed Kilgore said he expects Karrer will resign, seeing as he will no longer meet the qualifications of a peace officer since he can't carry a gun.

Karrer was placed on administrative leave last August when the incident occurred.

Deputies responded to his residence Aug. 20 around 10:20 p.m. concerning shots fired in the home. According to court documents, Karrer had fired a gun into a television that was along his bedroom wall. There were two children in the home on the other side of the wall at the time. He was found unconscious in his bed by his daughter.

Karrer was off-duty at the time.

According to court documents, Karrer had a history of drinking problems and had consumed three glasses of Jack Daniels that evening. He was also taking prescription Ambien around the time of the incident.

Karrer pleaded no contest to the charge of unlawful discharge of a firearm Feb. 3.[[In-content Ad]]
