WINNEMUCCA - Joyce Sheen has joined the Humboldt Sun newsroom as a full-time reporter. She has 20 years of experience writing the news of Humboldt County for KWNA AM and FM Radio, and also wrote for the Silver Pinyon Journal and Inside Northern Nevada.

Those two decades of covering local news have given her great background and contacts, Sheen said.

"I've tried hard to build a reputation-not just for getting the story, but getting it right," she said.

"I've had pretty unusual opportunities to be involved with both sides of the news, with 16.5 years in local government on the Winnemucca City Council and even longer than that on community boards and committees, working with people who try to make good things happen for our county," she said.

As her main news beats for the Sun, Sheen will cover Humboldt County Commission, Humboldt General Hospital, Regional Planning Commission and the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority. Plus, there are some general assignment reporting duties and feature writing that go with the job, Sun Editor Steve Lyon said.

"Joyce brings vast experience in covering local news to the Sun. She knows many sources in and out of local government. Her background gives her valuable expertise in understanding the issues that are important to the community," Lyon said.

In addition to her full-time reporting job at the Humboldt Sun, Sheen will still be serving on two committees in the community.

"Mayor Di An Putnam has asked me to serve on her Community Performing Arts facility committee and I serve with some fun people on the Community Capacity Building Committee, as part of the Winnemucca Futures Project," she said.

Humboldt County has been home since 1978 for Sheen. Her husband ,Torrey, is assistant chief of the Winnemucca Rural Fire Department and works at Brown's True Value Hardware. The Sheens owned KWNA AM and FM radio stations for 30 years. They have four children and nine grandchildren.

"In one way or another, I have enjoyed being involved in our community and writing news and features of our area for several decades. I'm doing what I love and I'm enjoying working with a great group of people; I feel very blessed, " Sheen said.
