The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh-grade girls basketball team began its season on Friday, Sept. 5, in Carson City with a pair of losses.
In the opener, the Warriors took on Eagle Valley and could not overcome an early deficit in the 27-23 loss to the Eagles.
Winnemucca did come back to outscore Eagle Valley 11-4 in the final six minutes of the game.
"The girls were very nervous playing first game of year," said WJHS coach Grant Beatty. "They jumped out on us early, but we couldn't quite get back in it. Not giving up easy second chance points, boxing out, and staying with our man on defense is what we need to improve on."
Sarah Fernandez scored 10 points to lead the Warriors. Sierra Maestrejuan added five points and Hailey Jones had four. Savannah Dalley and Julia Rivera each scored two points. Beatty added that Arianna Galindo played very good defense and was active.
Later in the day, Winnemucca took on host Carson and lost 46-28. The Solons led 23-18 at halftime, but pulled away with a 23-10 run in the second half. Carson had one girl score 22 points.
"Carson had a talented and athletic team," Beatty said. "We hung around in the first half."
Fernandez led the way 10 points, Maestrejuan scored seven and Carly Cappellen had three. Bella Bourquin, Alyssa Gomez, Kelcey Cooper and Kelcey Smith each scored two points.
Winnemucca hosted Fallon on Thursday and results were not available at press time. The Warriors make the short trip to Lovelock on Saturday to begin Tri-County play at Pershing County High School at 9 a.m.
"This group of girls work hard and are very coachable," Beatty said. "We think they will only get better and better with more experience. It should be a fun year."[[In-content Ad]]
