LOVELOCK - September was designated as National Library Card Sign-up month in 1988 by the American Library Association. The ALA and Pershing County Library remind parents that the most important back-to-school supply is a library card, said library staff Pam Munk.
"We will (also) be giving out replacement cards for free to those that have lost or damaged their card. New cards are always free," Munk said.
Replacement cards are $2 otherwise.
Pershing County Library provides an array of activities for all age groups designed to promote learning and the love of reading.
On Sept. 4, the pre-school story hour is back. The program is open to all pre-school children age 3 and older. It will take place each Tuesday and will follow the same scheduled vacations as the school district. Bring your child in before the first session to register and meet the instructor, Roberta Johnson. Call the library at 273-2216 for more information.
OneClickDigital is a new library program started in August. Patrons of the library with current library cards can now download audio books onto their Ipod, Iphone and MP3 players or to a home computer.
"We have already had a lot of positive feedback for this service," said Pershing County Librarian Kathie Brinkerhoff.
To access the new service you must have a valid library card. Then log onto the Cooperative Libraries Automated Network at www.clan.lib.nv.us and set up an online account. Once the account is set up, make sure to click on the Pershing County Library page in the drop down box in the upper right of the page. When the Pershing County Library page has downloaded, scroll down to find OneClickDigital on the lower left of the page. With the OneClickDigital program patrons have access to over 3,000 children and adult e-audiobook titles for download.
The books will self-erase from the device after the allotted amount of days but may be renewed on the website also. Call the library for more information about the OneClickDigital program.
"Listening to audiobooks helps children increase their vocabulary and introduces them to new ideas and information. Reading along while listening to audiobooks helps children increase their reading ability. Many adults enjoy listening to audiobooks while doing chores around the house and yard. And listening alone or with the family while traveling or commuting can help make time fly," Brinkerhoff said.
In addition to programs implemented to enhance reading enjoyment, the library is also a center to cultivate the pleasures of art and crafts.
On Aug. 11 a print-making workshop was presented at the library with artist, lecturer and printmaker Ashlea Clark. The workshop was well attended by local artists.
"The participants enjoyed this so much they want to do another full day of printmaking," Munk said.
Another printmaking workshop is tentatively scheduled for sometime in October, Munk said.
On Sept. 25, the library will present the art exhibit, "What Continues the Dream: Contemporary Arts and Crafts from the Powwow Tradition." The exhibition will display contemporary Paiute and Shoshone artwork, crafts and photography. The exhibit will be at the library from Sept. 24 through Nov. 16.
