BATTLE MOUNTAIN -June 1 was the 50-year anniversary of Bob and Dorothy's marriage. They were given a party by their son Joe and his family. They had games, songs, and readings prepared for them.
Dave and Anna Schaaf with their eight children, ranging in age from 5 to 23, entertained with several songs including some yodeling which was very special.
Jerry LaMiaux played familiar songs on his harmonica which carried throughout the room. Everyone enjoyed cake and punch later. Bob and Dorothy were presented with the keys to a newer car. Bob says it is hard to get used to and learn about all the new dials and buttons on his new car. Everyone is encouraging him to read the book.
Vera Smith came to visit about a week ago. The first thing she was asked to do was play the piano. Her playing is greatly missed. She moved away about a year ago to Nampa, Idaho. Her son Tim is with her. Her knee surgery has finally healed. She is walking well now without pain. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, playing the piano for others to sing and just visiting with her friends.
Everyone was happy to see her well and happy but sorry she isn't going to the Nampa senior center very often.
Wells, Nev., again hosted a Nevada State Fiddle Contest June 14-15. On Thursday June 13 private lessons were offered for the fiddle or the clawhammer banjo.
In the evening they had songs and stories of the road. On June 14, eight seniors from Battle Mountain joined Wells for their festivities. That evening we were treated to a nice dinner prepared by their senior center and a hot jam session a little later. We really enjoyed the hot music that the different categories presented. The children were excellent and very entertaining. The youngest played,"Orange Blossom Special," which brought everyone to their feet, clapping.
Our group from Battle Mountain stayed overnight to attend "Art in the Park" and the barbeque the next day. Hamburgers and chorizos were the menu of the day.
Some of our group had never seen Angel Lake, which is only 14 miles from Wells. We decided to take a side trip up to the lake. It was a beautiful day to enjoy the sunflowers and the many desert flowers. I told everyone about the sheep that traveled between Fish Creek Ranch and Toe Jam many years ago. The ewes had their lambs in the Toe Jam area. The countryside was full of sunflowers, which the ewes ate producing a rich milk for the baby lambs.
Toe Jam is in the mountain range north of the Spanish Ranch out of Elko. This land all belonged to the Ellison Ranching Company at one time.
Some thought Angel Lake was small but beautiful. One could see the fish along the side of the bank, but we heard that they were not biting at this time. The lake is stocked every year by the Nevada Department of Wildlife. In the spring they usually have a fishing competition for the kids. It is very educational for them, also.
The air conditioner in the bus worked really well. Everyone had a safe enjoyable ride. Jerry LaMiaux was our excellent bus driver. Thanks Jerry!
All of our men were treated to a fresh-baked loaf of bread for Father's Day. They said it was good and they liked it.[[In-content Ad]]
