Seniors receive defibrillator training, celebrate Easter

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Everyone agrees that the wind has blown very hard this spring. We finally got some much-needed rain. The grass will explode and also the spring flowers, including the wild flowers. Years ago I remember seeing a whole field in bloom with the vibrant orange-red Indian paint brush flowers.

Newmont Mine donated a defibrillator machine to our Senior Center. Shane Anderson came from the mine to give us a crash course in CPR and to teach us to use the defibrillator correctly. It was good to have several people updated on this important piece of equipment and to learn the new recommendations for CPR. Everyone that was interested was encouraged to attend the class.

The center was full to capacity on April 6. We enjoyed a ham dinner with sweet potatoes. Cake and ice cream were served for dessert. The cake was chocolate with green coconut trim on top that was made to resemble grass. Many wore their Easter bonnets that day. A special word was given to each hat. The words given to each hat were priceless. We had fun hearing these descriptions. Easter eggs were hid by Dayna Jim with special surprises in each of them. Everyone had great fun trying to find them as some had money in them. Dena Wheeler played the piano with some lively tunes.

One hears the phase, "Oh my aching feet," many times. The average person takes about 10,000 steps a day and about 3 million steps a year. It is no wonder the foot is a common site for problems. As one ages, your feet become wider and longer, your arch flatter and the fat pad on the bottom of the heel becomes thinner.

Some common problems are plantar fasciitis causing heel pain because the tissue that connects the heel to the toes becomes irritated. Morton's neuroma is the enlargement of the nerve between the third and fourth toes causing pain and burning sensations. Hammertoe is the bending of the toe into a clawlike position causing sores. Bunions are misaligned big toe joints from high heels and narrow-toed shoes. Flat feet are fallen arches and make one tire easily from standing or activity. Achilles tendinitis occurs when the tendon that connects the calf muscle to the heel bone becomes swollen and inflamed. If you are experiencing pain see your doctor. A tip to all, buy new shoes later in the day when feet are at their largest to make sure they fit properly.

On the brighter side, Sally Mathews, Marguerite Powrie, Betty Fulks, Clorinda Casper and Carrie Thompson are spending the weekend in Reno at the National Bowling Tournament. Sally said that she bowled well. They will not know until July, when the awards are given out, who won the tournament. Marguerite was given a patch to honor her 33 years of bowling in Nationals.

Senior Center bingos are still on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. We start about 12:45 p.m. Please come and join us if you want to have some fun.

Some double-flowered daffodils came from Marguerite's garden. They were really beautiful. Tulips will be in bloom soon.
