Senior center gets new windows

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The senior center is spruced up with new windows. They really look nice. They should help to cut back on heating expenses this winter.

We also got our piano tuned. I guess when he opened the back of the piano to tune it he saw that it was made in 1905. It was donated to the center many years ago by a local family.

Dayna Jim has everyone playing the horse races. Everyone has a horse that they have named. It can be moved on her horse racing circuit only by rolling the dice. If you miss a day, it cannot be made up. Oliver Hammersmark is in the lead at the moment. In about one week we should have the winner. Dayna will not tell anyone what the prize is.

The fundraiser for our museum was held on a warm beautiful Saturday evening. The food was again excellent. The senior center voluntary council paid for 25 seniors to attend. They enjoyed the music, friendship, sheepwagon and the stagecoach rides. The stagecoach was pulled by Eric Taylor's team of horses.

Margurite Powrie showed some of her crocheting at the Tri-County Fair. She won two fair favorites awards. She made a small tablecloth and also a table runner. The picots on her tablecloth were beautiful. Picots are hard to make and hers were all perfect in size. She also entered some of her photography.

Kathy Corbit did some beautiful knitting. She did some knitted pot holders where she knitted both sides at the same time. I hope she will have to come to the center and give us a lesson on this technique. Congratulations to both for a job well done. Helen also had some nice entries. If I missed some other Lander County entries I am sorry.

Bailey is a rescue dog that is from Nye County in Nevada. He has a team of dogs that have been trained to help rescue. This team has been called to help out in the flooding disaster in Boulder, Colo.

The last count of those missing was 300. I'm happy that Bailey's rescue team can help out. I'm very sorry for the people in Colorado that have lost their homes, property, and loved ones.

Ervin Thompson has completed the series of books written in the 1970s by Patrick O'Brian. They are all about the English navy in the early 1800s. I guess they are excellent in portraying the life of a sailor in those days. They had to pump water constantly from the ship to stay afloat.

He is now reading the "Golden Ocean" by Patrick O'Brian. It is about the life of the sailors in the 1700s when they tried to go around Cape Horn and many were dying from scurvy.

Fall flowers are now in bloom all around town. The periwinkle colored asters are especially beautiful along with the golden mums.

Water aerobics are now over for the season. We will miss the excellent chance to exercise in the water. Rita Rogers and Jana Moyes have been trimming shrubs and edging the grass in the swimming pool area. It will look nice this fall.

I hope everyone that wants a flu shot gets one soon. It takes two weeks after the vaccination to start protecting you. This is a great protection to keep healthy this winter.
