Senior Center celebrates Christmas

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mt. Quilt Guild "35" has been working very hard on making beautiful lap quilts for the home bound at our Senior Center. Each quilter in the club makes a block and then they are all put together into a beautiful lap robe.

Nineteen of these warm robes were delivered to the home bound before Christmas by our Meals on Wheels program. Thanks Rosie for making the deliveries.

I enjoyed visiting with Mary Lou Rives, master quilter, about the Quilt Guild. They meet once monthly at Motel 8 at 7 p.m. in the evening. Ladies from Elko, Spring Creek, Winnemucca, and Imlay join our Battle Mountain ladies to sew and quilt. I hear that some of the surrounding towns' guilds have disbanded their clubs. The president of ours is Timmy Lynn DeLong from Imlay. The club also furnishes lap robes to the ambulances, hospitals, and the needy. I am sure that everyone that received a blanket is enjoying the warmth this cold winter. A special thanks to Mary Lou Rives for coordinating this project and delivering them on time.

A special surprise came from Beta Kappa Sisters this year. Twelve beautiful gifts were purchased by them and wrapped. Later they were raffled off to the seniors. The gifts were very usable and special. I think everyone likes to win something, once in awhile. A special thanks to Beta Kappa Sisters for the special gifts.

A ham dinner and all the trimmings were enjoyed by everyone that attended the Christmas dinner. We would like to thank Shar Peterson and her crew from Newmont for serving that day.

The highlight each year is to give out the Senior of the Year Award. This year it went to Jerry LaMiaux. He was surprised with a jacket and dinner for two at the Owl. His welding skills have been really appreciated by the kitchen crew. He has fixed stools and small items for them. Some of us have benefited from his expert computer skills. He has been our van driver on many outings the seniors have taken. He is punctual, considerate, and always seems to really enjoy what we are doing. He is friendly to all. His daughter Stephanie Morton was able to share this award with him. Congratulations Jerry!

I heard from Vera Smith this year. She had the Insurance business here before she moved to Nampa, Idaho with her son Tim a couple of years ago. Her knee surgery has finally healed. She was able to take an enjoyable trip to Alaska with her sister and some of her family. Sam and Arleen Perdue are still in California enjoying the warm weather. They hope to come to Battle Mountain in the spring.

Our raffle was held after the Christmas dinner. We had 17 lucky winners. We want to thank everyone that contributed to our raffle this year.

Happy 2014 to all. Stay healthy and happy.
