LOVELOCK - It's springtime and you know what that means, the Pershing County Senior Center's annual Birdhouse Raffle.
The rules are simple. Build a birdhouse; it can be an original design or built from a kit. The birdhouse can be made of any type of material, be functional or decorative and can not exceed a three foot by three foot size. Next, donate it to the senior center at 630 Western Ave.
The birdhouse will be part of the senior center's Springtime Raffle. Community members wishing to take part can buy tickets for $1 each or six for $5, and place the tickets in a bag or basket in front of each birdhouse they would like to win. Raffle winners will be drawn on May 17 during the center's daily lunch.
Pershing County Senior Center Director Barbara Tobin said that some of the most unique birdhouses of past years have been built by John Aufdermaur, who fashioned his houses out of old barn wood. One of the birdhouses was actually auctioned off for $500, Tobin said.
There is no age limit for birdhouse engineers.
"Nina Aubrey is probably the oldest contributor and her great granddaughter Bela Rosas who is 8 is probably the youngest person to donate a birdhouse," Tobin said. "Both have participated for the last four years."
The money raised will help with special projects around the senior center. Tobin said that the center sends out about 30 birthday cards each month. Some of the money may go toward the purchase of cards and postage, as well as bingo supplies for their daily games after lunch. Some funds may also be spent on a special event the center is planning next month for Older Americans Month.
"The funds are used to make life nicer for our clients and to benefit the largest number of older Americans," Tobin commented.
Birdhouses must be at the senior center by May 11 to be included in the raffle, Tobin said.
