It was hosted by the Battle Mountain PTA, Title I and the 21st Century After School Program on behalf of the Lander County School District.
Teachers, principals, secretaries and aides made approximately 500 blueberry, cranberry, apple cinnamon, carrot, lemon poppyseed and almond poppyseed muffins for the occasion to show their appreciation to local moms. Beverages included coffee, Tang and bottled water.
The tables were covered in light green, pink and yellow paper and scattered with paper flowers. Children from the ASP had made welcome banners that hung in the entry way of the corridor. A slideshow featuring pictures of local kids and mom quotes played throughout the first half of the event.
Muffins were served by WATCH D.O.G.S who volunteered so that moms would not have to serve during the event.
Youth volunteers handed out flowers (provided by the Battle Mountain PTA and Garden Gate Floral) and raffle tickets as "moms" arrived.
Each ticket entered the mom and her kids into a drawing to play the Minute To Win It games on stage.
Principals Amy Nelson (Eleanor Lemaire Elementary School), Lorrie Sparks (Battle Mountain Elementary Schools) and Michelle Caramella (Battle Mountain Junior High School) spoke throughout the event.
Caramella welcomed everyone on behalf of all of the teachers, principals and staff members at the local schools. She thanked them for everything they do throughout the year to make sure their children are safe, secure, loved and sent to school prepared to learn everyday.
She acknowledged how much work goes into making those things happen and expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the schools for the effort these women put into raising their children.
After Caramella's opening address, Jimi Newkirk, local director for the 21st Century After School Program, spoke briefly about the ASP and informed moms and kids that summer school would be available starting on June 11. She then had everyone stand and participate while the ASP kids performed "If You're Happy and You Know It."
Next, Sparks and Nelson kicked off the second half of the event by drawing raffle tickets and calling winners up onto the stage with their kids to participate in Minute To Win It games chosen by Title I team members.
Five families were called up at a time to compete in various games involving teamwork. In one, moms had to catch balls thrown by their kids in a bucket on their heads.
In another, moms and kids raced to empty tissue boxes with only one hand. In a game very reflective of a mom's day to day life, moms had to pack everything they need in a day into a purse while their kids packed a lunch and everything they need in a day into a backpack.
They then both had to get everything they need from point A to point B without dropping anything. Games were run by youth volunteers Mason Burkhart and Erick Haney.
The event was brought to a close with a video and song entitled "The Mom Song" by Go Fish Guys. The funny song included lyrics like "If you work every day but you never get paid (nobody could afford that anyway!) - you're a mom!"
In closing, from every teacher, principal, secretary, aide and volunteer who has the honor to know and work with your child we would like to sincerely thank you for sharing them with us. Every child is a treasure and we are all so grateful for the opportunity to know each of them. Thank you!
