WINNEMUCCA - Flu season is upon us and the Humboldt County Community Health Clinic has flu vaccine for anyone 6 months of age and older. They will be having a walk-in flu clinic on Thursday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the clinic at 102 E. Haskell St.
If you are unable to participate on Nov. 10, please call 623-6575 or stop into the clinic at 102 E. Haskell St. and make an appointment for your flu shot. The cost for the vaccine is $20. People with Medicare or Medicaid coverage are asked to bring their cards when they come in. If cards are not presented at the time of service, patients will be required to pay for their vaccine.
Who should get vaccinated this season? In general, anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting seasonal flu can get vaccinated. However, it is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) that certain people should get vaccinated each year. They are either people who are at high risk of having serious flu complications or people who live with or care for those at high risk for serious complications.
Flu season most often peaks in January or February. If you get vaccinated in September or October will you be protected all season? According to the CDC, yearly flu vaccination should begin as soon as vaccine is available and continue through the influenza season, into December, January and beyond. The CDC also states that the protection (immunity) provided by the vaccine lasts about a year, so vaccination in early fall will continue to provide protection for the duration of the United States flu season, which can last until April or May. For people who are not able to get their influenza vaccine in the fall, vaccination in December, January and beyond is beneficial in most years.
