WINNEMUCCA - In March of 2007, the Humboldt County Search and Rescue Unit was established by Sheriff Ed Kilgore. This unit is composed of all volunteer members from our community that donate their time to train and assist persons who may become lost within the borders of Humboldt County. Search and Rescue has also assisted local law enforcement with numerous evidence searches in several high profile cases within the county as well.
The unit is divided into several teams, including a Jeep squadron, ATV team, horse mounted, tracking dog teams, air support, and general ground searchers and logistical personnel.
The Search and Rescue Unit has their monthly meetings the first Tuesday of every month and conducts numerous training exercises throughout the year, including large scale winter and summer exercises each year.
The Unit is currently seeking additional members to join their ranks. Applicants need to be at least 18-years-old and have no felony convictions. Possession of a valid Nevada driver's license is a plus but not specifically required. Applicants must also agree to a short background investigation being conducted on them prior to appointment.
If you love the outdoors and have an extreme, sincere desire to assist persons who may find themselves in distress, the Humboldt County Search and Rescue Unit is for you. Applications can be picked up at the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office located at 50 West 5th Street in Winnemucca. Questions can be directed to Special Programs Director Tom Casey at (775) 623-6419.
