RENO - Several of the highest-achieving students who will graduate from northern and southern Nevada high schools are choosing to attend the University of Nevada, Reno. The University is partnering with area high schools in Nevada Scholars Signing Days, ceremonies reminiscent of high school athletes' "signing days" to acknowledge the decision of these "best and brightest" scholars to pursue their college degree in Nevada.

One National Merit Scholarship Finalist, Austin Shinagawa, will be recognized in the signing-day ceremony. This scholar will be joined by many more who will "sign" from various Washoe, Douglas, Humboldt and Clark County schools during the next few weeks, including Taylor Schwartz, a Lowry High School graduate.

According to officials, the university's Nevada Scholars Signing Day ceremony at Lowry High School on May 30 went very well.

Schwartz was honored at the ceremony has qualified to receive UNR's Presidential Scholarship, one of the University's most prestigious scholarships. Her interest is in civil engineering which is a course of study through our College of Engineering. The dean of the University's College of Engineering, Manos Maragakis, attended last Friday to welcome Taylor to the program. A number of Taylor's classmates and family members attended as well, including her parents, David and Katie Schwartz.
