School starts next week - are your kids ready?

With the first day of school approaching, the Humboldt County School District has some back-to-school announcements.

The first day of school is Aug. 25, and it is a full school day. New students are encouraged to register as soon as possible - before school starts.

Children entering kindergarten must have reached their fifth birthday on or before Sept. 30. First grade students who have not attended kindergarten must bring proof of birth and immunization records at the time of registration.

A new food service provider, Chartwells K12, has been contracted by the district. Breakfast will be provided at all schools this year at a cost of $2. Serving times will vary according to each school.

Lunch for kindergarten through sixth grade is $3 per day. For seventh and eighth grade, lunch is $3.75 per day, and for high school kids, lunch is $4 per day. Milk is included with the price of a hot lunch.

For those eating a cold lunch, milk may be purchased at 50 cents each.

School lunch applications will be available on the first day of school. Prepaying for meals may be done in one to two week increments, and charging for meals may only be done in an emergency.
