SCHOOL DISTRICT INVITES PARENTS TO PRESENTATIONS ON NEW STATE STANDARDS

Participating parents will have the chance to win a new iPod Touch at each school

WINNEMUCCA - School district officials say they will need every parent's support to effectively roll out new state standards that begin to take effect this year.

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) initiative is a voluntary, state-led effort to establish a shared set of clear, educational standards for English language arts and mathematics.

Wednesday, Nov. 28, parents at Lowry High School were introduced to the new standards during an evening presentation. Over the coming weeks, four more schools will invite parents to take part in similar presentations as follows:

• 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 - Sonoma Heights Elementary School

• 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5 - Grass Valley Elementary School

• 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12 - French Ford Middle School

• 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13 - Winnemucca Grammar School

Presentations at Winnemucca Junior High School and the rural schools are currently being scheduled.

Humboldt County School District Superintendent Dave Jensen doesn't believe the new standards can see success without parental support and reinforcement at home.

"We just won't be able to do it without that support and help," he said. "This is such an immense undertaking for our district, for our teachers and especially our students; we know that engaging our parents is the key to bringing it all together."

The coming weeks' presentations will help parents understand the knowledge and skills their students will need for success in college and careers.

They also will learn very specific and important ways that they can help their students master this educational upgrade.

As an incentive for parents to attend these important meetings, each school will host a drawing for a brand new iPod Touch at the conclusion of their evening's presentation. Each adult participant will receive one ticket for the drawing.

The Nevada State Board of Education joined 44 other states in October 2010 by adopting the new standards.

Dr. Jensen said that bonding together by a majority of states makes this a landmark time in education.

"For the first time, 90 percent of our nation's public school teachers will be focused on the same rigorous academic content standards," he said.

"Parents can be assured of their children receiving a high quality education no matter what part of the country they live in, including Humboldt County, Nevada."
