WINNEMUCCA - The Humboldt County school board approved the contract of the district's new assistant superintendent, Dawn Hagness, at their meeting last week and she will be bringing with her a wealth of experience, according to Superintendent Dr. Dave Jensen.
Hagness, originally from North Dakota, began a teaching career in West Wendover 19 years ago and from there became a teacher trainer and from there the principal at West Wendover Elementary School.
Two years ago, Hagness relocated to Elko to fill the director position for the Northeastern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program (NNRPDP).
Dr. Jensen said that Hagness will be able to "provide a support system as we shift on to Common Core State Standards and college/career readiness." He said that one of the things that made Hagness stand out among other candidates for the position was that she made significant changes to curriculum structure in West Wendover leading to greater academic performance.
"She understands the needs that are coming down the line," he said, "and she already has contacts in place."
Hagness said that through her work with NNRPDP, she has been able to work closely with the six superintendents in northeastern Nevada, with Dr. Jensen and Kelly Novi, and with the Humboldt County School District principals.
Hagness said she is looking forward to the excitement and the challenges that she knows the assistant superintendent position will bring with it.
"I am looking forward to being part of a district just beginning to implement CCSS and part of a change process involving the new teacher evaluation system," Hagness said.
Hagness will be relocating to Winnemucca with her husband, who is a teacher, and their two young daughters. She said they have been researching and exploring the area for the past six months and are excited to raise their daughters in the community.
I'm excited for the new opportunities this brings for my family and me personally and professionally," she said, "and we look forward to growing with the Humboldt County School District and Winnemucca."
