Scam targeting local utility customers

The Winnemucca Police Department issued a warning Monday of a phone scam that targets utility customers, according to a news release.

Callers posing as electric company employees are telling customers they are behind on their bills and must purchase a Green Dot of MoneyPak prepaid debit card, load it with money and hand over the serial number or else face their electricity being shut off.

According to WPD, recent reports have been received that the suspicious calls were made from the number (888) 201-7958.

WPD said do not provide any personal information or financial information over the phone unless the identity of the company being represented is verified. NV Energy can be contacted at (775) 623-3667 and Southwest Gas at (877) 860-6929.
