Santa Rosas site of national public lands day celebration

Volunteers will celebrate with stewardship, food and fun in the outdoors

WINNEMUCCA - September is a month of celebrating the outdoors and our public lands. Community members from Winnemucca, Lovelock, Battle Mountain and the surrounding area will participate in a celebration of their public lands on Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Santa Rosa Mountains near Paradise Valley.

Volunteers of all ages across northern Nevada will join Friends of Nevada Wilderness for this exciting event and will have an opportunity to "give back" to their public lands through stewardship. Efforts in the area will include barbed wire fence pull efforts in Mullinix Creek as well as opportunities to collect native plant seeds to help the area recover from recent wildfires.

In addition to the barbed wire fence pull and seed collection, students from the Wildlife Society Club at UNR will be receiving training on range development monitoring. Any volunteer is welcome to participate in this training. National Public Lands Day is a special occasion to celebrate public lands and this event will be the first of its kind in the Santa Rosas.

This project is family friendly so families are encouraged to join in the efforts and there will be stewardship opportunities for all ages. Nevada Outdoor School will be providing an all-day kids camp where campers will have an opportunity to make new friends, play outdoor games and learn about their public lands. Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Nevada Outdoor School have teamed up to bring stewardship and education opportunities to northern Nevada youth since 2005.

Volunteers are encouraged to gather some family members, friends, or coworkers and join the volunteer efforts despite skill level or outdoor experience. Most importantly, volunteers will have an opportunity to explore the beauty of the Santa Rosas, spend time with family and friends, and truly make a positive difference on public lands.

Volunteers will meet Saturday morning on Sept. 15 to shuttle up to the project site (approximately 45 minutes). People can camp at the Paradise Valley Guard Station Friday night, Sept. 14, or drive out to Paradise Valley on the morning of the 15th. Saturday meals will be provided by Friends of Nevada Wilderness staff and carpooling will be available.
