BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County School Board members honored Battle Mountain native Sallie Snapp at their Sept. 25 school board meeting for being nominated as the Administrative Assistant of the Year for the Nevada Association of School Boards (NASB).
School board members held a reception for Snapp, who is the payroll-personnel clerk for the school district, and presented her with a certificate of recognition for being nominated. Board Chair Anna Penola and board member Susan Davis selected Snapp for the nomination. The winner will be announced at NASB's annual awards banquet to be held Nov. 23 at the Atlantis in Reno.
"Sallie is a very valuable asset to our district," said Davis, who serves as a director on NASB and represents Lander County. "Her primary role is to do payroll, which she is very good at, and she's been with the district for all of these years. She's a homegrown girl and she's very committed to her job and the district and is well respected by those who work with her and those who benefit from her knowledge and expertise."
Penola added, "Sallie is a valuable asset to our district. She has work ethics that should be admired and works very hard in her job. Sallie does what is needed and more and never complains. She gives more than 100 percent."
Snapp said being nominated and honored by the board made her feel good about her work.
"I was stunned, but I feel very honored," she said. "I really appreciate what they did. I feel like I am a really dedicated employee and for them to do something like that, I feel honored. It makes me feel very appreciated. I take pride in helping people."
Snapp, who has served in her position for more than 18 years, has a wide range of job duties but focuses mainly on payroll and personnel which consists of

monitoring teacher licenses, running W-2s, handling state reports, organizing timesheets, gathering applications and hiring substitute teachers.
She said she loves her job at the school district because she enjoys working with people and because Superintendent Jim Squibb is a good boss.
"It's just the interaction with the people," Snapp said. "I feel like I am a people person. Jim makes it very easy to come to work. We all work really good together. We all take pride in what we do and I think that all starts at the top."
Born and raised in Battle Mountain, Snapp is a 1974 graduate of Battle Mountain High School. After graduating, she took a variety of classes at Great Basin College and earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license.
She went to work in the lab at Milchem for five years, soon moving to an office position for four years. She spent two years at M I Drilling doing lab work and payroll. After that, she stayed home for five years to raise her two daughters.
In 1994, she began her job as the payroll-personnel clerk for the school district, leaving only briefly between 2010 and 2012 to move to Twin Falls, Idaho, to be closer to her family.
While living there, she worked fulltime as the assistant payroll clerk for Twin Falls County and part-time as a CNA at the Twin Falls Care Center. Her job at the county also included recording documents, processing passports and issuing marriage and liquor licenses. She returned to Battle Mountain and her job with the Lander County School District in 2012.
"I missed the school setting, the staff, the kids," she said.
She said she is happy to be back in Battle Mountain and added that she appreciates the quiet and calm of the town after living in a big city.
"Being raised in a small town, you just get used to that," Snapp said. "You know people. I just like the small town atmosphere, especially recognizing somebody on the street or in the grocery store and being able to visit with them."
Snapp has two daughters and one granddaughter. Her daughters are Jordan Snapp and Jamie Snapp, both of Twin Falls. Her granddaughter, Lilly Liles, also lives in Twin Falls. She also has one 5-year-old black cat named Momma Kitty.
When Snapp is not immersed in her many duties at the school district office, she can be found camping, water skiing, riding four-wheelers and fishing.
