Sage grouse meeting held March 5 in Battle Mountain Commissioners, PLUAC discuss current status, conservation efforts

Members of the PLUAC include Phillip Williams, Jerry Annis and Frank Whitman. Most of the discussion centered on sage grouse, its current status and conservation efforts in Nevada.

Both Lander County Executive Director Gene Etcheverry and Commissioner Dave Mason gave reports on recent meetings they attended in Elko. Mason said he is looking for a strategy the county can support.

Rod Davis, from Cooperative Extension, discussed the conservation planning efforts which occurred in Lander County. The proposed plan for central Nevada can be found on the NDOW website at www.ndow.org.

Davis identified two critical planning management areas in Lander County which should receive the majority of conservation efforts. He discussed the Bootstraps program and results of pinyon-juniper removal and the success of increasing bird population.

Other critical conservation efforts include protection of springs, removal of feral horses and predator control. Ravens prey on sage grouse nests. Other discussion included the impact of hunting on the bird. Hunting sage grouse is closed in the PMUs.

The PLUAC will take up the sage grouse issue and proposed county policies toward conservation efforts at the regularly scheduled meetings.

The PLUAC is also in the process of revising its Policy Plan for Federally Administered Lands. The PLUAC meets the first Monday of each month, usually in Austin
