Safety fair set to keep residents 'Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow'

LOVELOCK - Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow is a safety fair that will be held on May 21 at the Pershing County High School.

Although the fair is taking place at the high school, it is not exclusively for the students, said fair organizer and Pershing County Safety Coordinator Pam Munk.

In fact, city of Lovelock and Pershing County employees will receive one hour of safety credits for attending the event.

Events will start for Pershing County middle school and high school students at 1 p.m. with Hannah McDonald, youth coordinator with the Nevada Statewide Coalition Partnership, speaking to students about distracted driving. Then students will be given the opportunity to browse booths with a DUI simulator, a tricycle obstacle course and fatal vision exercises.

The fair will open to the public at 2 p.m. with a speaker from the National Safety Council, Shelley Forney. Adults also have the opportunity to browse the booths and speak with presenters. There will also be a booth hosted by the local motorcycle club Ghost Soldiers presenting information about motorcycle safety.

At 3:15 p.m. a distracted driving simulation will be presented by the Frontier Community Coalition youth group. During the presentation Pershing County Sheriff deputies, Lovelock police, Lovelock EMS, CareFlight and Pershing General Hospital will arrive and speak about their roles when attending to an injury accident.

Parents and grandparents will also have the chance to have their children's car seats inspected for proper installation. Certified installers will be on hand from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. to show how to correctly install a baby and child car seat. New car seats will also be available for purchase with prices ranging from $10 to $35. Vouchers will also be given for those who cannot afford to buy a car seat.

At 4:15 p.m. Pershing County's University of Nevada Extension Educator Steve Foster will speak briefly on driving safely around farm vehicles.

After that, Munk said she will have NHP Trooper Chuck Allen speak about distracted driving laws and their consequences.

Munk said that the event blossomed out of her efforts to plan a safety event for county employees.

"I see so many people around town driving and talking on their phone. Statistics show that one in four accidents is caused by distracted driving. I just wanted to educate our people," Munk said.

As she spoke to one group after another, many wanted to be part of the safety event, she said. Seeing that the cost for such a large event was rising, she went to the Frontier Community Coalition, which gave her a grant with the stipulation that the event take in area students and the general public.

"The local businesses and companies have also been great in helping out with donations, too," Munk said.

Other event sponsors include Eagle-Picher, Coeur Rochester, Jim's Tire, Florida Canyon Mine, Lovelock Inn, Pershing County Community Center, Pershing General Hospital, Pershing County Sheriff's Office, Lovelock Police Department, Pershing County High School Art Department, Lovelock Volunteer Fire Department and CareFlight.

The Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow safety fair is open to the public from 2:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Events and booths will be located in both PCHS gyms and parking lot.
