RSVP announces local training for caregivers

WINNEMUCCA - RSVP will hold their quarterly training session for Caregivers and RSVP Respite Care volunteers on Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., at the University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension office in Winnemucca, 1085 Fairgrounds Road.

Dori Ward, program coordinator from the Alzheimer's Association, will be the featured speaker and will discuss Alzheimer's treatment and care and ways to help loved ones in dementia. The training session will be broadcast to Cooperative Extension Offices via videoconference to Fallon, Lovelock, Ely, Caliente, Pahrump and Winnemucca. Caregivers and interested parties in each of these cities will be participating.

Respite Care is a free or low cost program offered through the Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program which provides caregivers with essential breaks for themselves. Respite Care helps families by providing a break for two to four hours a couple of times per week and caregiver support services to Nevada's rural senior and disabled population. Caregivers often succumb to stress and exhaustion before the loved one they are caring for if never given time away from this overwhelming 24/7 responsibility. RSVP's mission is to provide respite and caregiver support services to Nevada's rural senior and disabled population by helping families avoid premature institutionalization of their loved ones, thereby allaying the terrible fear of the elderly and afflicted that they will not be able to remain in their own homes where their possessions, family and memories all help alleviate their condition. This respite program gives direct relief to those who care for their family members and the family member themselves. Donations to the program are greatly appreciated but no one is turned away because of inability to pay.

RSVP is always looking for respite care volunteers. Volunteers receive a stipend of $175 per month plus mileage reimbursement. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or if you are a caregiver in need of assistance and would like to learn more about our program you are welcome to attend.
