Roy Albert Harrer

Roy Albert Harrer

Roy Albert Harrer, husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away at Harmony Manor on March 28, 2013, at the age of 82.

Roy was born in Sacramento, Calif., on May 5, 1930, to Henry and Elizabeth (Stroh) Harrer. He was the youngest of five children. The family moved to Winnemucca, Nev., in 1931.

Roy married the love of his life Kathryn English on March 15, 1952 in Winnemucca. They had two children, Susan Harrer of Winnemucca and Leo (Donna) Harrer of Orovada. Roy worked as a ranch hand in his early years then went into carpentry and painting. He worked for his brother Jack Harrer for five years and Melvin McCoy for 10 years. For the next few years he farmed in Grass Valley and Orovada. Up until his illness made it difficult to do construction work, Roy was self-employed.

Roy loved to camp, hunt and fish, and spend time with his family. He very rarely missed a junior rodeo, high school rodeo or team roping in which his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren were in.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Elizabeth Harrer, and bothers Bill, Hank and Jack.

He is survived by his wife Kathryn, daughter Susan, son and daughter-in-law Leo and Donna, granddaughter and grandson-in-law Tess and Tyson Ellis of Winnemucca, grandson Josh Harrer of Orovada, sister Elizabeth (Betty) Harrison of Jerome, Idaho and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy's family wants to extend a heart felt thanks to all the nurses, aides and staff of Harmony Manor for the care and compassion they showed Roy and his family members during his residency at the Manor.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Convention Center, West Hall, with lunch to follow. Arrangements are being handled by Albertson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.

Roy, here's hoping the horse you ride is not too ornery, and may the meadows and hills always be green and full of game and the streams full of fish.
