Rotary Club of Winnemucca holds annual golf tournament

The Rotary Club of Winnemucca held an extremely successful golf tournament last weekend, with a record 63 teams participating at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

Numerous community sponsors advertised during the tournament and helped the players have an enjoyable time. All of the proceeds from the Rotary Club tournament are used to support youth activities, events and scholarships for Humboldt County students.

In the first flight, Ethan Gray and Andy Mendoza were the team winners with a 5-under par 139 gross score. There was a second-place tie at 142 between Josh Shaver/Chris Mendoza and Jeff Carter and Jeff Patterson. Zach Herzog/Ben Burhans and Louis Roman/Andrew Meyer tied for fourth.

Mark Carlson and Robert Velasquez were first in the net division with a 120. Second place went to the team of Cameron White and Justin Durant with a 125. There was a tie for third place between the teams of Ken Mullins/Kevin Mullins and Mike Adams/Manny Esquivel at 126.

In the second flight, the team of David Adams and Karen Adams shot a 158 to win. Second place was won by the John Moore and Ken Moore team with a 162. Jon Carlson and Rory Upshaw shot a 168 to place third and Ignacio Garijo and Les Warr were fourth at 170.

In the net portion of the tournament for the second flight, three teams tied for first place with a score of 123. Those included William Bauer/Frank Rolando, Ken Kannier/Pat Michael and John Southall/Joe Leal. Robert Owen and Dan Owen were fourth.

Klondex Gold and Silver Mining Company sponsored a putting contest, which was nearly won by Tim Roybal who just missed a 50-foot putt that would have paid him $10,000. The Recology target drive contest was won by Heather Patterson and Gray on Saturday. Gail Piquet and Jake Weber won the target drive on Sunday and each players won $300.

Newmont Mining Corporation sponsored closest to the pin and Joe Lean and John Moore won $100 each for their efforts on Saturday and Sunday respectively. A and H Insurance sponsored a hole in one contest on hole No. 5 with a prize of $10,000 cash.

Hycroft Resources and Development, Inc. sponsored closest to the pin on hole No. 2, which was won on Saturday by LJ Shorter and on Sunday by Willie Hunter and Chompoo Landt for $200 each.

Sonoma Cycle donated a Polaris "Ace" as a hole in one prize which went unclaimed during the tournament.

The longest drive contest was sponsored by Barrick North America/Turquoise Ridge and on Saturday, Chad Peters won a .38 caliber pistol while Landt won a silver necklace. On Sunday, Mark Carlson had the long drive for the men and won a .17 caliber rifle. Landt won the ladies long drive and was awarded a jeweled necklace for her efforts.

Humboldt General Hospital was the title sponsor and provided a golf glove for every participant in the tournament. Silver Standard Resources -Marigold Mining Company provided lunch each day for everyone. Winners Hotel Casino and Jim Dandy Productions were also Gold level sponsors of the tournament.
