BATTLE MOUNTAIN — A week after a 56-6 loss to Rite of Passage to end the regular season, the Battle Mountain High School football team was back at the school near Yerington for the opening round of the NIAA 2A State Playoffs on Friday afternoon.
With freshman Dan Itza at quarterback, the Longhorns put in a new offense during the week, looking to confuse Rite of Passage. Battle Mountain was able to move the ball at times through the air but saw its season come to an end with a 36-0 loss.
“We played much better this time,” said BMHS head coach Tim Knight. “When we played them the first time, we could not move the ball on them at all. We spent the week before the game putting in a new offense and it worked at times.”
Rite of Passage took an 8-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 9-yard run by Devontay Williams. Williams added two more touchdown runs of 50 and 15 yards to give the Rams a 22-0 advantage at halftime. Those would be the only offensive points of the game for Rite of Passage.
Williams added his fourth touchdown of the day when he returned the opening kickoff of the second half 82 yards for a score. Jerry Davis intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for the final score of the game.
“Defensively we stepped it up in the second half,” Knight said. “They are a team with so much speed it is hard to prepare for until you see it in person. It took us six quarters but we were finally able to stop them.”
Battle Mountain had two drives stopped on downs deep inside Rite of Passage territory, including a pass that was caught in the back of the end zone, but the receiver was ruled out of bounds. The Longhorns were held to just 30 yards rushing on 22 carries and were led by Tommy Mahon with 22 yards. The Longhorns passed for a season-high 100 yards.
“It was still a pretty good season for us,” Knight said. “We came into the year with just two starters back and one of them did not play until midway through the season. We have a good nucleus for next year with all of our skill guys returning.”
