1921 - 2013
Ronald Lawrence "Larry" Starr, age 92, passed away on Nov. 15, 2013, at Pershing General Hospital in Lovelock with his family and cousin Norma Montgomery by his side.
Larry was born in Estacada, Ore., on April 14, 1921, to Douglas and Violet Starr. He was an only child and his family came to Reno in June 1922. His family was in construction and he had lived in every town in Nevada.
They owned a Richfield service station at Mill and Wells in Reno from 1937 - 1938. He moved to Lovelock in 1939. He married Mercede Marcucci in 1941 and he worked for Lockheed Aircraft for a year and a half.
Larry then joined the Navy as a Seabee during World War II. He was in the 67th and 72nd Battalion and the 8th Special Battalion.
Larry was a past member of the Reno Demolay, past president of the Lovelock 20 - 30 club, past president of the Lovelock Lions Club and a five time past president of the Lovelock Shrine Club. He was a member of Humboldt Lodge 27 F & A M; the Scottish Rite; Kerak Shrine, Royal order of Jester's, Court 33, the Kachina Klub and Quetzalcoatl Trucke Teocali #17. He sponsored many children for treatment at Shriners Children's Hospitals.
He also served as a member of the Lovelock Volunteer Fire Department and ambulance. He helped start little league and coached for 12 years in Lovelock; was a Demolay Dad for 10 years; a Rainbow Pop for four years and received the cross of colors. He started the Lovelock Honda Hotshots in 1982. Larry also served on Gov. Russell's Highway Safety Board for four years and Gov. Sawyer's for two years.
He owned R. Larry Starr Construction; R. Larry & Sons Redi Mix; 3 Bars Ranch and 3 Bars Cattle from 1945 and sold the Construction Company in 1988 and then turned the ranch over to his son Craig in 1994. Both sons were in the ranch and cattle business. He especially enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons and grandsons.
Larry is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mercede (Mary); son, Ronald Byron (Janie) of Fernley; son, Craig Lawrence of Lovelock; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Crippled Children's Hospital c/o Kerak Shrine, 4935 Energy Way, Reno, NV 89502-4105.
Per Larry's request, no services will be held. Entombment will be at Masonic Memorial Gardens in Reno, Nev., under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Home in Fallon.
