Richard Edward Hubbard "Hubb" passed away on Friday, Aug. 31, 2013, in Golconda, Nev. He was born in Tuba City, Ariz., on Sept. 10, 1955. He attended grade school in Hayden and Winkelman, Ariz. After the death of his dad in 1969, he along with his mother and sister, moved back to Deming, N.M. to where his family was from. Richard graduated from Deming High School.
Hubb was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Edward Hubbard, Jr., Ruby Frances Hodge (Hubbard) Kennedy and stepfather Ike Kennedy; also a brother, John William "Bill" Hubbard. He is survived by his brothers, Jim Hubbard (Linda), Frank Hubbard (Cisco) and a sister, Lana McDowell along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Also, his dog Rags who will be cared for by his dear friend Ella Hight.
From the age of about eight, Richard was destined to be a cowboy. He followed in his dad's footsteps. He rode horses, raised animals and tended a garden in the Winkelman Flats. In Deming, he got his own horse and after high school he worked on ranches around Deming before taking a job as foreman of the Carefree Ranch in Carefree, Ariz. That was the start of his cowboy way of life. From there he bought a small ranch of his own in Carefree and worked the ranch along with a mining job. A friend of his had purchased the Spur Cross Ranch in the Pumpernickel Valley near Golconda, Nev., and asked if he would run it. This was a working guest ranch. He enjoyed meeting people from all over the world who came to the ranch to spend their vacations as cowboys. Many were repeat guests. He worked there for many years. His last few years were spent working for the Rock Creek Ranch in Golconda.
He will be missed dearly by family and friends.
A memorial will be held at Rock Creek Ranch in Pumpernickel Valley on Sept. 21 at 11 a.m.
