Richard "Dick" Filippe, 73, died July 28, 2013, at Battle Mountain General Hospital in Battle Mountain, Nev.
Richard was born Nov. 22, 1939, to Dan and Eva Filippe in Yreka, Calif., where he grew up and joined the Air Force serving his country for four years. He married the love of his life Sheila on March 11, 1974, in Falls Church, Va.
"Dick" worked in the mining industry everywhere from Alaska to Washington, D.C., and everywhere in between. He retired from Turquoise Ridge Mine in 2002, where he served as a supervisor of underground mining. During this time he also took college courses for his writing and spent his time writing after his retirement.
Richard was a member of the Elks Club for over 30 years. He enjoyed golfing, flying as a private pilot and traveling to Puerto Vauarta, Mexico, where he never wanted to leave when it was time to go home. He was also an avid card player and competed in The World Series of Poker three years.
Richard is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sheila, his sons, John & Lynette Filippe of Oak Harbor, N.J., Shane Filippe of Reno, Nev., Dustin & Sara Filippe of Winnemucca, Nev., and his stepson Charles & Shawn Dunn of Washington; grandchildren Samantha Dunn of Wyoming, Andrew Dunn of Idaho, Nicolas Filippe of New Jersey, Ben Filippe of Winnemucca and Danielle Filippe of Oregon, and a great-granddaughter Tara Lee Dunn of Idaho. He is also survived by his brother Gary and wife Donna Filippe of Klamath Falls, Ore., and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents and son Danny Filippe.
Services will be held at the United Methodist Church, 138 W. Winnemucca Blvd., on Aug. 2, 2013, at 2 p.m., with viewing starting at noon.
Donations can be made in Richards name to Humboldt Volunteer Hospice, Winnemucca, Nev.
