LAS VEGAS - The Nevada Press Association honored the Lovelock Review-Miner last weekend with a couple of prestigious editorial awards.
The press association held its annual Better Newspaper Contest awards and banquet Saturday in Las Vegas, an event that attracts newspaper people from across the state.
This year's contest was judged by journalists and editors in Oklahoma. The Review-Miner competes against other similar-sized newspapers in Class III - community newspapers printed weekly or monthly with circulation of less than 10,000.
Sports writer David E. Harrison won first place for Best Sports Story. His story, "Lady Mustangs lasso second hoops title," captured the action courtside as the Pershing County High School Girls basketball team fought for a state championship in Reno earlier this year. Harrison produced a comprehensive story full of choice details and play-by-play action spread over three pages.
Harrison also won first place for Best Sports Column. His "Know Your Mustangs" column garnered favorable comments from the judges. The judges liked the question and answer format Harrison used. "It's more candid depending on the questions posed to your subject and is a bit of fresh air..."
Harrison said he started the informal, short-answer interviews with senior student-athletes about two years ago and does one per week.
"It's become a bit of a rite of passage, though I've yet to get around to everyone by graduation," Harrison said.
In addition to editorial awards, the Review-Miner also won recognition in the advertising category.
Graphic designer Terrie Chism took third place in the Best Large-Space ad category. The judges said, "nice work. Good use of color."
Another Review-Miner graphic designer, Joe Plummer, won third place for his Eagles Crab Feed ad in the Best Black & White ad competition. The judges said it was a nice looking ad. "Great illustration. Plenty of white space sets this apart, which advertisers always appreciate."
