The Loopy Leprechaun Coed Softball Tournament is scheduled for March 15-16 and organizers are hoping for a fun event that will raise money for the Relay for Life organization.

Two Relay for Life teams are putting together the tournament, which they hope to make an annual event. The team captains said some members participated in Tahoe's Snowball Tournament and thought it would be a great idea to bring a similar event to Winnemucca.

The tournament will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., both days and consist of 25-minute games played by teams of eight to 10 people.

At least half the team's players have to be women, according to the tournament rules. The ball used in the games will be a softer version of a softball, the captains said, which makes it impossible to hit a home run.

"It's not a serious tournament," the team captains said. "It's just to have fun and raise money for a good cause."

The tournament will feature a double-elimination structure and the main rule of the game is, "Have fun and no whining!"

The registration cost for a team is $200 but organizers are encouraging teams to reach out to local businesses for sponsorship. Local businesses can also contact event organizers if they would like to set up a vending booth for refreshments and snacks.

Other Relay for Life teams will also participate by setting up booths and selling items to spectators and players.

There is no required uniform for teams but organizers are encouraging teams and spectators to dress up for the event. There will be a prize for the team that shows the most spirit through its costumes and a prize for the best leprechaun costume.

Teams have until March 10 to register and can do so by emailing loopyleprechaunsoftball@gmail.com. For information visit the event's Facebook page at http://facebook.com/loopyleprechaunsoftball.

There will be a team check-in and payment collection March 14 at The Pig BBQ & Pub from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Team captains said they are hoping to have 20-25 teams registered to participate in the event.
