Relay For Life raises awareness about oral cancer

Editor:

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and as the publicity chair for the Relay For Life of Winnemucca I am committed to raise awareness on the many different cancers that affect our friends and family.

According to http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org, there will be approximately 42,000 people in the U.S. who will be diagnosed with oral cancer in 2013.

An alarming fact about oral cancer is that it has been increasing in rate of occurrence for the last five years. One of the main causes of oral cancer is tobacco use. Fewer than 7 percent of those diagnosed with oral cancer are actually due to unidentified causes. A huge percentage of oral cancer can be prevented. One major way to prevent this cancer is to help others quit using tobacco or never begin. When you quit using tobacco, even after years of use, you can greatly reduce the risk of this cancer.

Relay For Life of Winnemucca can help in the fight against oral cancer and all other cancers with the support of our wonderful community. We want to thank you for the great support we have received thus far with sponsorships and our fundraising events.

It is because of the outstanding effort of our community that we can continue to help the American Cancer Society fund research. There are many other opportunities coming up that you can participate in, to stay up to date and become involved. Please follow us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/WinnemuccaRelayForLife.

We are looking forward to the Relay For Life of Winnemucca event this year. If you are interested in being more involved in this event you can register as a participant or team by going to www.winnemuccarelay.org.

For more information, please feel free to contact Kayla Jonas, team development chair, at kaylajrelay@hotmail.com or Anda Latham, event chair at winnemucca.relayer@gmail.com.

Together we can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
