WINNEMUCCA - American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Winnemucca took place on July 21-22. This 24-hour event was the culmination of a fundraising season supported by 378 registered participants, including 38 cancer survivors, forming 32 teams. Together, with help from members of the Winnemucca community and surrounding areas, these Relayers worked diligently over the course of several months to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.
Teams hosted multiple fundraisers, yard sales, car washes, bake sales and cupcake-grams, to name a few, throughout the fundraising season. It was these fundraisers, individual donations, and event sponsorships that put Winnemucca in the spotlight this year. At the beginning of the season, committee leadership partnered with their ACS staff partner and decided to set a fundraising goal for the local event of $64,500. They had no idea at the time how determined and dedicated this year's volunteers would be.
As the Relay For Life of Winnemucca Event came to a close on July 22, it was obvious that our volunteers had completely disregarded that fundraising goal, and by the end of the fiscal year, Aug. 31, the amount fundraised was unfathomable. Relay for Life of Winnemucca closed out the 2012 fundraising year with a grand total of $94,549.43, an accomplishment that can make all of us proud!
As part of the preparation for the 2013 fundraising season, Event Chair Anda Latham and Team Development Chair Jennifer Toland attended the Great West Regional Relay Summit in Portland, Ore., on Nov. 2-3. In addition to networking and training, Jennifer and Anda represented Winnemucca during the awards ceremony. Our community and event were awarded the following:
• Sparking Hope Award - for having the event with the highest percentage fundraising increase over the previous year - In the Great West Division.
• Explosive Growth Award - for a 49 percent fundraising increase over 2011.
• The Hope Award - for meeting or exceeding goal.
• Winnemucca Relay was also recognized for having the top donation amount per capita in the Division.
"By raising more money and involving more people in Relay For Life, Winnemucca and our surrounding areas are enhancing their investment in the American Cancer Society's mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back," said Anda Latham, 2012 event chair. "Relay For Life represents hope that the disease will one day be eliminated. But until it is, Relay provides money for research, and support services for cancer patients and their families."
