The final regional playoffs the high school season get under way this weekend for Lowry and McDermitt high schools.
Winnemucca will play host to the Division I-A, III and IV North Track and Field Regional Championships at Lowry. Action gets going at 3 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday. It is an NIAA event and cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for seniors. Children 8 and under are free.
The top four finishers in each event in each division advance to the NIAA State Track and Field Championships on Friday, May 23, and Saturday, May 24, in Carson City.
The Lowry softball team will make the trip to South Tahoe for the Division I-A North Regional Championships. The Lady Bucks will face Churchill County at noon on Friday. Both teams finished the season at 19-5 in league play, but Lowry earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of beating Churchill County twice in the regular season. Fernley, the regular season title holder and defending Division I-A state champion, will play Dayton at 10 a.m. Friday.
The losers of the opening round games will play at 2 p.m. on Friday and the winners meet at 4 p.m. A second elimination game will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday with the championship at noon. If a second title game is needed, it will be played 30 minutes following the first game.
The top teams advance to the NIAA State Softball Championships at Bishop Manogue High School and Hixson Park on the campus of the University of Nevada from May 22-24.
The Lowry swim team will head to Carson City on Friday and Saturday for the Division I-A North Regional Championships. Swimming begins at 3 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.
The top four finishers in each event qualify for the NIAA State Swimming Championships to be held at the Buchanan Natatorium on the campus of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas on Saturday, May 24.
The Lowry boys golf team will have to wait a week for its state championships, traveling to Pahrump on May 21-22 at Mountain Falls Golf Club. The Buckaroos have won three of the last four Division I-A state championships, including the last two. Lowry has won a state-record 12 state titles.[[In-content Ad]]
