Regional basketball championships begin in Spring Creek and Fallon

With the conclusion of the regular season last weekend, the McDermitt and Lowry high school basketball teams begin their quest for the state tournament with the regional championships this week.

McDermitt kicks off play in the Division IV Regional Championship in Spring Creek on Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs, who finished first in the East Division at 9-1, will play Mineral County at 6:20 p.m. at Spring Creek High School

Other first-round match-ups include Pyramid Lake/Owyhee at 8 p.m., Eureka/Virginia City at 4:40 p.m. and Smith Valley/Wells at 3 p.m.

The semifinal games will be played at 3 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. at Spring Creek High School on Friday. The championship game is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, also at Spring Creek High School.

The top two teams advance to the state tournament on Feb. 27-28 at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

The McDermit boys finished second in the Division IV East at 7-3 and will play Mineral County on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Spring Creek Middle School.

The remainder of the first round will see Eureka play Excel Christian at 8 p.m., Whittell will face Owyhee at 4:40 p.m. and Virginia City takes on Wells at 6:20 p.m.

The Division I-A North will hold its regional championships on Friday and Saturday at Churchill High School in Fallon and the Lowry girls are the top seed at 16-0.

The Lady Bucks won their final 16 games of the regular season and swept Spring Creek and Elko last weekend to go undefeated in the league. Lowry will face Spring Creek at 6:20 on Friday. Churchill County and Elko will meet at 3 p.m.

The championship game is set for noon Saturday. The top two teams advance to the state tournament on Feb. 27-28 at Silverado High School and The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

The Lowry boys finished the regular season at 13-3 in the Division I-A North at 13-3 and will play Spring Creek at 4:40 p.m. on Friday. The Buckaroos beat the Spartans 59-47 this past Friday in Spring Creek. Elko and Churchill County meet at 8 p.m. on Friday.

The championship game is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday. The top two teams advance to the state tournament on Feb. 27-28 at Silverado High School and The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
