LOVELOCK - Red ribbons have been spotted all over the town of Lovelock. The ribbons are to promote awareness of drug abuse, Frontier Community Coalition Director Jeff Munk said.
Red Ribbon Week was started in the 1980s and is the oldest drug prevention campaign in the country, according to drugsrdumb.com.
The week started as a commemorative of the life and death of DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who died at the hand of drug traffickers in Mexico on Feb. 7, 1985.
Red Ribbon Week is nationally recognized and celebrated to help preserve Camarena's memory and all the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to support the nation's struggle against drug trafficking and abuse.
