Record rainfall over the weekend

Winnemucca broke a record for rainfall Sunday with total precipitation of .69 inches; the previous record for that date was for .49 inches in 2007, according to the National Weather Service Elko office.

Winnemucca received .14 inches on Saturday and trace amounts of rainfall Friday when the weather system moved in.

So far this calendar year Winnemucca has received 1.33 inches of precipitation and so far this water year (which begins October 1) it has received 3.99 inches. That puts the area just above normal in terms of how much rainfall is received on average. Before last weekend's rainfall event, the Winnemucca area was right below normal, according to NWS.

Starting Wednesday and into Thursday there is a chance for more precipitation. According to the NWS, the preliminary outlook is that there won't be as much rainfall as was seen over the weekend, but it will be a measurable amount. Starting late Saturday and into Sunday there is a chance for more precipitation, possibly in the form of snow.

Winnemucca may see more moisture long term, NWS said, as there is an active pattern moving over the area.
