Ranch Hand Rodeo celebrates 25 years

This marks the 25th year for the Winnemucca Ranch Hand Rodeo, which will draw 30 four-man, one-woman teams from all over the West to vie for over $20,000 in prizes and enough bragging rights to last until the 2015 event.

March 1-2, competition will take place in Saddle Bronc Riding, Steer Stopping, Mugging, Team Roping, Ranch Doctoring and Trailer Loading.

All teams must have at least one woman team member to compete in Steer Stopping and Wild Mugging. All five members must compete in Mugging.

The entire Ranch Hand Rodeo Weekend will kick off Wednesday, Feb. 26, with the Winnemucca Cow Dog Trial.

New this year, participants will have the chance to take part in "Gambler's Scramble" beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27. Handlers draw cards to find out who their partner will be, then each pair runs their dogs together.

Following at 6 p.m., the Winnemucca Cow Dog Trial finals will begin with the top dogs from the Open, Ranch and Brace classes competing.

The weekend's other events include a Ranch, Rope and Performance Horse Sale, Invitational Bull Sale, Stock Horse Challenge, Western Trade Show and Kids' Dummy Roping and Stick Horse Barrels.

All events take place indoors in the Winnemucca Event Center.

The rodeo will get underway with the Calcutta auction of ranch hand teams at 10 a.m., on March 1. Competition will get underway at 11 a.m. and resume at 10 a.m., on March 2.

Admission is free Wednesday through Friday as well as the Ranch, Rope and Performance Horse Sale on Saturday evening.

Admission to the Ranch Hand Rodeo is $8 for adults and $2 for kids 5-12.
