BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain PTA held their annual Turkey Bingo event on Thursday, Nov. 17, just in time for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. In addition to the many great prizes that were given away throughout the evening, there were also a couple hams as well as a complete turkey dinner box handed out to lucky winners.

The doors to the Battle Mountain Civic Center opened at 6 p.m., with bingo scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. By the time 6:30 p.m. rolled around, the place was packed. PTA officers and volunteers had to bring out more tables and chairs as even more people continued to file in. The 21st Century Afterschool Program brought along 46 of their students for a fun-filled evening. The final number of attendees was given as 268. What a great turn-out for such a worth-while event!

After initially experiencing some technical problems, event organizers quickly remedied the situation and got the bingo game going. The evening consisted of 10 games that led up to the final big black-out game. Various local businesses graciously donated many of the great prizes that were put on display near the bingo callers table. Winners were able to go up and choose their own prizes.

A couple frozen hams were handed out for "H" (ham) and "S" (swine) bingos, and turkeys were given out as special prizes for the "T" bingos.

The first bingo caller was Mike Young. He stepped in when the PA system wasn't functioning properly at the beginning of the night, and used his deep, booming voice so that even the people in the very back could hear the numbers being called.

Battle Mountain High School student Mason Burkhart came in about half-way through and finished calling the numbers for the rest of the evening. Both callers did a fantastic job.

Once again members of various high school groups jumped in and helped make sure the event went off without a hitch. Jocelyn Ramirez, Parker Rochester, Tesia Campbell, Tinesha Wilson and Jessenia Ramirez manned the kitchen area, serving drinks, popcorn, nachos and candy for those interested in snacking during the game.

The black-out game winner was Leslie Jorgensen. She took home a turkey dinner box, complete with everything needed to make a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. Her box contained a voucher for a turkey, turkey roasting pan, stuffing, potatoes, yams, various canned vegetables, pie fixings and green bean casserole ingredients.
