Prescribed fire planned this week

ELKO - A 170-acre prescribed fire is planned for multiple days between April 15 and 19 on public land near the Izzenhood Ranch approximately 24 miles north of Battle Mountain.

This project is designed to decrease dead tumbleweeds accumulated along fencelines to allow for wildlife passage, including antelope. The tumbleweed piles average from one to five-feet high. The project will also decrease the risk of a damaging wildland fire and improve mule deer and antelope winter range habitat.

Resources on the project will consist of one wildland fire engine, one fire-suppression equipped utility terrain vehicle and overhead personnel.

The planned fire will only take place if weather conditions are in accordance with the prescribed fire plan. The area will be closed to public access during the planned fire, however roads will remain open. Past experience in this fuel type and area has proven very little smoke is generated and it is of short duration.
