WINNEMUCCA - This weekend, one of the few remaining legal street drag competitions in the United States returns to Traders Way - a normally quiet Winnemucca street.
But Aug. 2-3, Traders Way will be anything but quiet as the Good Times Street Drags roar into town. The two-day event will play host to everything from souped-up Impalas to classic GTOs going head to head for the right to be named King of the Hill.
The Good Times Street Drags are sponsored by the Northern Nevada Racing Association (NNRA). After 21 years, the drags have become a summer mainstay for local as well as out-of-town residents.
With close to 150 racers expected to compete for thousands in cash, the drags have added another great component to the Fifties Fever classic car fest planned for this same weekend.
Racers compete for cash in one of three categories: Pro, Sportsman and Street. A King of the Hill Race Saturday also is planned, giving racers a shot at a giant-sized trophy and up to $2,000 in cash. Participants should register for the Fifties Fever weekend before starting their engines, though, because cash awards double with registration.
On Friday, gates will open at 6 p.m. with technical inspections from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and test runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday will see the Main Event and King of the Hill races. Gates will open at 9 a.m. with technical inspections from 9 a.m. to noon and test runs from 10 a.m. to noon. Racing will begin at 1 p.m.
The drags will put racers' skills to the ultimate test, but the rewards are worth it. By registering with the Fifties Fever weekend, Pro winners have the chance to win up to $600 cash, Sportsman winners will receive up to $400 and Street winners will be awarded up to $300 cash.
Drivers under 18 must present a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. In addition, NRHA safety rules apply to all drivers, and tech inspections and helmets are required.
Cost to enter a vehicle in this year's Good Times Street Drags is $65 for one or both days. Cost to spectators each day is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 12. Children under 5 get in free and must be accompanied by an adult.
