Poke & Peek Thrift Shop now has a drop-box for off-hour donations

WINNEMUCCA -The Poke & Peek Thrift Shop now welcomes donations at customers' convenience.

The store located at 3200 Bengochea Circle in Sage Heights has a new drop box where local residents can drop off goods when the shop is closed.

Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary member Joe Gough built the box, which includes a flag that is triggered to "fly" when someone makes a donation. Gough has full view of the box from his home; when he sees the flag, he knows the box needs to be emptied.

Gough, who joined the all-volunteer group at the first of the year, said the box is just one more way to make it easier for local residents to donate to the Auxiliary. "We accept all kinds of donations," he said, noting that the shop takes in all kinds of electronics, old appliances and any kind of scrap metal.

"We use it all for the benefit of the hospital," he said.

The Humboldt Hospital Auxiliary has donated $2 million to Humboldt General Hospital since its inception in 1969. Members also have logged tens of thousands of volunteer hours.

The "pink ladies" and their gentlemen counterparts volunteer their time in the various departments at Humboldt General Hospital, but the lion's share of manpower goes toward the Poke & Peek where volunteers sort, price, display and sell clothing, toys, books and household items.

The Poke & Peek Thrift Shop is located approximately one mile north of the Winnemucca Convention Center at 3200 Bengochea Circle in Sage Heights. The store is open Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Donations are gladly accepted in-house during the store's hours of operation or in the drop box during off hours.
