BATTLE MOUNTAIN - A slew of events are planned in Battle Mountain and Austin to celebrate the Fourth of July.

Battle Mountain's celebration, which is being sponsored by Lander County, the Battle Mountain Arts Presenters and the Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority, actually begins July 3 with food and vendors at Elquist Park starting that evening.

There will also be a karaoke contest from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for ages 8 and up. It is free to enter and there will be prizes. DJ Ricky Hawlem and the local band Pushing Back will perform from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. The show is free.

On July 4, there will be a Firecracker Gold Tournament at Mountain View Golf Course starting at 8 a.m. The cost is $5 plus greens fees and cart. The tournament contest is pick your partner, two-person best ball. Those who would like more information can call (775) 635-2380.

The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. with line-up at 9:15 a.m. at Etcheverry's Foodtown. It will end at the Battle Mountain Civic Center and is free to enter. There are prizes.

The parade grand marshals will be Salle and Louis Lemaire. They were selected by the organizers because of their commitment to preserving the history of Battle Mountain and the surrounding areas and because of their role in opening the Battle Mountain Cookhouse Museum, said event co-organizer Ami Rogers.

From 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be food and vendors at Elquist Park. There will also be inflatables, kids' games, a dance contest, a Hula Hoop contest, a jump rope contest for the kids and music by Disk Jockey Connection. The times for the games and contests will be posted at the park.

There will be fireworks at dusk, which are being put on by the Battle Mountain Volunteer Fire Department.

Rogers and Laura Schmidt are the main event organizers for everything except the fireworks. They are collaborating with Bullock Management to put on the golf tournament, Rogers said.

"There are a wide range of activities on the 3rd and 4th so we hope there is something for everyone," Rogers said.

"It's a great time for old and young," said Virginia Austin, Lions Club president. "It's just a great day. It'll start early and end with wonderful fireworks."

It kicks off with an all-you-can-eat Pancake Breakfast for $6 at Bert Gandolfo Park from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The parade line-up will be at 9:30 a.m. with the parade starting at 10 a.m. and going down Main Street. There will be cash prizes, said Austin.

At noon at the park, there will be a free barbecue that will consist of hotdogs, hamburgers and all the trimmings. After lunch, there will be kids' games that will include a three-legged race and a quarter scramble. There will be an egg toss for kids and adults. There will also be a softball tournament.
