Plenty happening at Battle Mountain High School

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Fall brings cold crisp mornings, bright orange pumpkins and softly falling leaves. At Battle Mountain High School it also brings a flurry of activities.

It can feel like we just started school but we are almost halfway through the first semester and that means Parent-Teacher Conferences. On Oct. 30, conferences will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Nov. 1, conferences will be from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Please make time to meet with your child's teachers. Parent involvement is one of the greatest influences on student success.

BMHS will be administering the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) during the week of Nov. 4 - 7. This testing opportunity is for 11th and 12th graders who have yet to attain a proficient score in one or more areas.

Students in Nevada are required to take and score proficient on the HSPE. If a student has all the credits necessary to graduate but has not passed the HSPE, that student can enroll in an adult dducation program and, after appropriate remediation, continue to take the exam during regular testing windows. A student who has yet to score proficient on any area of the HSPE does not meet the criteria to receive a diploma from BMHS.

On Nov. 6, BMHS will be holding a college and career fair. This is primarily for our 11th and 12th graders. Representatives from several colleges and universities will be there to answer your questions.

Also, you will be able to speak to representatives from local companies and businesses about career opportunities that are available after graduation.

On Nov. 20 a representative from Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho will be on campus to meet with interested students.

In observance of Veterans Day, BMHS will be closed Monday Nov. 11. BMHS encourages all of the community to take a moment on that day to consider the impact, dedication and sacrifice of our men and women who volunteer to serve.

Winter sports season at BMHS is starting soon. Girls and boys basketball along with the wrestling team will be holding tryouts in November. The first official day they can start to practice is Nov. 16. If you are interested in participating please contact BMHS for more information.

BMHS students will be collecting canned food on Nov. 19. Students will be going house-to-house asking for donations that will go to the local food pantry to be distributed.

BMHS tries to educate our students to be good citizens as well as good students. Volunteering time and encouraging community involvement is just one way we are accomplish that goal.

The Battle Mountain High School band and choir will be holding a concert on Nov. 25. It will be held in the commons area and will start at 7 p.m. Please come support our students in the band and choir.
