WINNEMUCCA - The Senior Citizens of Humboldt County Inc. Board of Trustees accepted the keys to a brand new Ford F-150 pickup truck outfitted with a "hotshot" pod for the delivery of homebound meals from Tom Lammel of Fallon AutoMall. Lammel personally delivered the new vehicle to the Pleasant Senior Center on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
The Pleasant Senior Center ordered the vehicle in May and coordinated with Jay Crawley of Delivery Concepts for the manufacture and installation of the hotshot pod after manufacture of the pickup truck at the Ford factory in Michigan.
The vehicle costs $28,935, but with the assistance of Lammel the Pleasant Senior Center was able to order the vehicle off the state register and received an $8,603 discount. The dealer further discounted the vehicle by $2,350 for a total vehicle cost of only $17,982
The hotshot pod cost $18,798, including installation. The hotshot pod sits in the bed of the truck and includes a two-door refrigerated unit, and a two-door oven unit that enables the Pleasant Senior Center to transport both hot and cold portions of lunch meals, ensuring that they are served at mandatory safe food temperatures.
The total cash cost of the vehicle was $ 36,808 and was funded by the Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD) grant ($20,000) United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra ($17,000) and the Newmont Mining Corporation's Legacy Fund. Program costs for the homebound meals delivery program are funded by ADSD and the Legacy Fund, and includes funding for raw food products, driver and kitchen staff wages and packaging materials.
The Pleasant Senior Center is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for those 60 years of age and older, and those with disabilities by providing services under several federal and state grant programs. We are proud to partner with both United Way, and the Newmont Corporation's Legacy Fund, whose generous donations provide grant match funding, program support, and capital purchases such as this.
The center currently provides over 70 local residents with lunch meals. The addition of this new, four-wheel drive delivery vehicle will enable us to widen the delivery area and provide meals to some folks that we just couldn't reach with the old one. This vehicle replaces a 2001 Ford Ranger delivery vehicle that was donated to Pleasant Senior Center from Elko, after 10 years of use at their program.
"We are so happy to have a brand new vehicle for our drivers this year," said Wil Haley, treasurer and vehicle committee chairman of the Senior Citizens of Humboldt County Inc. "The new vehicle will be much safer and will be able to keep the temps correctly. The hand-me-down from Elko will be used as a back-up vehicle only."
