LOVELOCK - The members of the Pershing County Swine Club are gearing up for their annual show.
This is a big commitment and requires plenty of time and dedication. The biggest part of this commitment, of course, is caring for their animals each and every day. This requires them to feed and water their animals twice a day along with making sure they have fresh water and get an ample amount of exercise. Yes, they take their pigs for walks, just like most people walk their dogs.
Besides caring for their animals they are required to attend monthly meetings, weekend field days and do weekly weigh-ins of their pigs. It is important to monitor the weight gain of each animal to make sure they are gaining weight at an acceptable rate each day.
Another requirement of each member of the club is to complete a formal presentation on a subject of their choice regarding swine. A few examples presented for this year included how to weigh your swine with a string, types of swine parasites, the dangers of pigs getting too much sun and how to feed your pig in preparation for the show.
The Pershing County Livestock Show and Auction will take place on Mother's Day, May, 13, at the 4H Building located near the industrial park.
The weekend following the Pershing County show (May 17 - 21) the group will be heading to Reno for the Nevada Junior Livestock Show, where local members will compete against others from several northern Nevada counties.
They would like to invite everyone in the community to come and show their support for all of the 4H members. They would be more than happy to show you their animals and answer any questions you may have.
