LOVELOCK - Twenty seven 4-H members have raised livestock animals and will be showing them at the Pershing County Junior Livestock Show on Sunday, May 13, starting at 9 a.m. at the 4-H Building.

Swine, beef, sheep and goats are raised by the youth and shown for quality. Both market and breeding projects are judged. The youth are then judged on their showmanship abilities.

At noon, the best dressed contest is held. Animals will be dressed up and judged for the fun of it. An Old Timers Showmanship Contest will also be held.

Starting at 1 p.m., the top market animals: beef, sheep and swine will be auctioned.

The finale includes the auction of baked items which the 4-H families have made. A delicious time is had by all.

However, being a 4-H livestock member means much more than raising an animal. Through their animal projects, members learn to have aspirations, set goals, take responsibility for feeding and raising their animals, help one another at field days, learn good sportsmanship at contests and keep records, as well as the financial and business end of the project. Through other activities such as judgings, the members apply what they have learned about the animals.

Communication is another important aspect members learn through their projects. Each member gives a presentation in front of their group in order to complete their project requirement. Some are confident enough that they make their presentation in front of all the Livestock Clubs and the judges. There are cash prizes for the top Junior, Intermediate and Senior Demonstration/Presentation sponsored by L. D. Burrows Memorial. However it is the speaking ability which is the main prize.

This year's communication award winners were: Junior Niko Katsaris on "Goat Parts," Intermediate Owen Bake on "SunSwine on Your Pig" and Senior Abby Bake on "Weight Just a Minute." Others presentations given were: Jake Cerini on "Cattle Trivia," Kati Rae Cerini on "Breeds of Pigs" and "What Would You feed Your Goat;" Daralyn Moura on "Who's that Worm" and Anna Gallagher on "Sheep Feeds." All the posters associated with these presentations are eligible to go on to NJLS in Reno.

Although these are extremely important parts of their education, so are the friendships they make which last a lifetime.

Come join us for Mother's Day and support our youth at the Pershing County Livestock Show.
