PCHS' Winter Spirit Week ends with a flourish A trio of trumpets performs National Anthem

LOVELOCK - Numerous festivities marked the culmination of Winter Spirit Week last Friday night at Pershing County High School. Obeying a theme of "Protect This House," all four basketball teams defeated their respective opponents from Fernley.

Dr. Tim Newman '65, co-captain of Pershing County's third and most recent state champion boys basketball team, arrived with trumpet in hand from his home in Akron, Ohio, to deliver a brassy version of the National Anthem along with erstwhile trumpeters, Principal Russell Fecht and Bryan Ringo, who was introduced as the school district's new music teacher.

At halftime of the girls varsity basketball game, members of both schools' Spirit Squads and student bodies came together spontaneously to take part in the usual group dance, inspiring sophomore Nico Rodriguez to throw down a challenge to a game Vaquero when the former hit the floor and began break dancing.

During halftime of the boys varsity tilt, both of Pershing County's Spirit Squads performed a routine on the hardwood before juniors Gabby Switzer and Damien Cowger were named Winter Spirit royalty by virtue of the Class of '13 being able to raise nearly $450, the most of any class.

As the evening continued, the Class of '12 received plaudits both for having the "Best Banner" and for amassing the most Winter Spirit points overall. Later, before all was said and done, the "Mustang Express" was revived, much to the delight of the PCHS student section.
